October 2005 | Richard Stubenvoll/Sivel has created a game that is a rarity among most new designs - something that is utterly new. Friedrich is a wargame, but there are no, as often in wargames, dice, and it also doesn't last 8 or more hours. An interesting period of european history is the basis for an engrossing boardgame that uses simple playing cards as it's mechanic for battles, without ever being foreseeable or dry. The basic principles can be explained very quickly, but the game possesses immense depth. Friedrich can be recommended to anyone who is on the lookout for new gaming experiences. |
