Convivial Conflicts: The Form, Culture and Play of Modern European Strategy Games | Stewart Woods | This thesis examines the nature of social play through a focus on a particular form of board game, known as the eurogame. It is grounded in a strongly ludological approach that situates games, particularly those that involve social play, as an important form of communication that is central to human culture and experience. Through the course of the thesis I argue that social play cannot be studied in isolation, but must be situated through an examination of the games being played, the identity of the players, and the gaming culture that sustains and informs them both. | |
